LCD monitor
Modem LCD screens offer the best balance of ergonomic features with image quality, as well as minimizing eye-strain. Images are stable, geometry is perfect, and colour rendition is excellent. But they cost far more than a CRT monitor with the same screen size. Bear in mind, too, that less-expensive LCD models may have restricted viewing angles.
Mitsubishi
This is a flat-screen CRT monitor offering very high resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200 pixels on a 48cm screen. Available at an economical price, this is an excellent beginner's monitor.
Philips
The smallest size for image manipulation is a 38cm screen with a resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels, as offered by this model. An optional multimedia base with speakers can be fitted.
LaCie
A very large 56cm screen, an ability to project up to 1,800 x 1,440 pixels, and good colour control make this an ideal monitor for image manipulation. The deep hood is a useful bonus, too.
Apple
A stylish LCD monitor providing 1,280 x 1,024 pixel resolution with excellent image quality - a good all-rounder and suitable for image manipulation. Some users may find that it sits too low on the desk.
Philips
This 43cm LCD monitor provides a viewing area comparable to a 48cm CRT screen, and a resolution of 1,280 x 1,024 pixels. An optional wall-mount kit is available.
Silicon Graphics
A high-specification, 46cm screen with professional-quality colour adjustments, and with a resolution of 1,600 x 1,200 pixels. Purchase price, however, is high.
Which screen is best?
CRT monitors are capable of very high picture quality at relatively low cost. However, there are some health concerns regarding radiation emissions as well as the operator fatigue caused by the flicker from what is an essentially unstable image. This flicker, though not normally visible, can cause cause eye-strain. Modem LCD monitors offer a stable image and extremely high image quality, but at a cost three or more times that of equivalent-sized CRT screens. Nonetheless, if you work for very long hours at the screen, especially in detailed work such as writing or image manipulation, an LCD screen is recommended.
